I will use this page to post some of my earlier writing that would otherwise languish in obscurity, and maybe sell copies of some of them that I have made into tidy little booklets. First the freebies, though.

Children of Metis
In 1996 I was asked to write a chapter on Pagan childraising for a scholarly book titled Cyborg Babies: From Techno-Sex to Techno-Tots (Routledge, 1998). Yes, my first reaction was abject terror. Finally I decided that a realistic goal might be for my essay to be the one in the book which is not assigned reading, but which is interesting enough that everyone reads it anyway. Here it is (as a Word document), in all its dated glory.

Song of Tiamat
This is a poem I wrote for one of my doctoral classes in 2001. The goddess Tiamat has always fascinated me, and this is part of my re-imagining of her story. View pdf file.

Booklets
Since Circle Round was published in 1998 I have been doing a fair amount of writing, for my doctorate, for workshops I have led, and because I was interested in certain subjects. Most of it has been published in anthologies, small journals, or presented as papers at conferences. This year I've decided to reprint some of the best essays as booklets, and offer them for sale to interested readers.

Here is a list of all the booklets I've put together so far, with a brief description of their contents. Just download this order form, fill it out, then email, fax, or mail it back to me, and I'll send out your booklets!

The Baby and the Bathwater
This booklet is a series of four blog posts I wrote in August 2006 on the Gnosis Cafe blog about my experiences in Reclaiming. The series begins by highlighting some of the trouble spots I see in the tradition, goes on to identify the ways Reclaiming's legacy has positively impacted the culture, and ends with what I see as the future of Reclaiming.

What I Know About Trance
An essay about trance from both the perspective of someone leading a group trance in ritual and a participant in such a ritual. I talk about the energy of a trance, or guided visualization, having an intelligence of its own. I discuss some of the pitfalls for leading visualizations, and some ways that participants can take care of themselves and heighten their experience.

To See Ourselves As Others See Us: Academics Look at Modern Paganism
This is a book review of Jone Salomonsen's book Enchanted Feminism: The Reclaiming Witches of San Francisco. It was my effort to understand how this community is perceived by Pagan academics, and how useful these studies are to us as practitioners.

Music and Magic
In this essay I outline ten different ways to bring music into ritual and ceremony. Written for a general audience, this booklet talks about the power of music and how it can help bring focus to our spiritual practices and group celebrations. This essay is the basis for a series of workshops I have offered on music, magic, and ritual.

A Pagan View of Evil
This booklet comes from a paper I wrote for my doctorate. In a class on Evil taught by Dr. Matthew Fox, I took the opportunity to critique his position and also begin articulating a Pagan view on Evil, using the ideas of James Hillman and Gus DiZerega to bolster my arguments. I hope this essay spurs more Pagans think through this topic.

Fertility, Ecstasy, and the Roots of Feri, plus Victor Anderson's Memorial
Two short essays are included in this booklet, both of which were first published in the WitchEye zine. The first looks at the etymology of the word "Feri" and the second is a description of my experience going to the memorial for Victor Anderson in September of 2001.

Archetype, Paradox, and the Path of the Priestess
This is the text of a paper I presented at the Women's Spirituality Conference in San Francisco in 2003. It is my attempt to look at the role of "priestess" in an historical context across cultures, as a way of shedding light on some of the issues encountered by modern-day priestesses. No pictures, but plenty of provocative ideas!

Dream Incubation, Healing, and Spiritual Practice in the Ancient World
Originally presented at the International Association for the Study of Dreams conference in 2003, this paper takes an in-depth look at dream incubation, in particular the ways in which dream incubation has been portrayed in Western thought, up to and including the present day.

Dream Incubation: Finding the Way In
This is a talk presented at the 2006 IASD conference in Boston. It is a humorous, engaging discussion of the philosophical questions that arise when we decide to incubate, or ask for, a dream for spiritual guidance. Based on my experience working with the incubated dreams of myself and others for many years, it should be helpful to anyone curious about dream incubation.
